Creosote

Creosote is so widespread within its range that it can be used to define the Mojave Desert's territory. It is the wonder plant of its habitat; a virtual drugstore for Native Americans. Mixed with a sweetener, Creosote Tea is an invigorating way to start the day. When illness strikes the tea is a remedy for respiratory infections, common colds, bowel troubles and abdominal cramps. In cases of poisoning, a heavy dose can be used to induce vomiting. Native Americans have even turned to Creosote to treat cancer.

The leaves possess antiseptic properties. A poultice made from a Creosote solution will treat wounds, prevent infections and neutralize poisons. Another popular medical use is as a liniment for the relief of swollen limbs in the elderly.

Beyond its pharmacological properties, Creosote contains a substance that is a powerful antioxidant, or rancidity, retarder for fats and oils. It can also be prepared for use as an anti-dandruff shampoo.

"As a Southern California native, our desert
wildflowers are hardly new to me, but after
watching Season of the Sand Blossoms,
I felt I relived 60 years of desert visits
in one sitting." Ralph Salisbury,
